Sited on the campus of IIT at Carr Chapel—the only religious structure designed by Mies van der Rohe—Santiago Borja’s project Theatre consists of an installation and a performance that engages this non-denominational space of worship. The installation creates a virtual space through the use of two flat elements, one suspended above the other. It comprises specially-designed petate rugs, woven in Mexico. These elements respond to esoteric geometry, creating a connection in between space and belief. To activate the space and the installation, Borja is developing site-specific performance in collaboration with Ingrid Everwijn, the lead teacher of the Eurythmeum CH in Dornach Switzerland.

Born in Mexico City in 1970, Santiago Borja has a BS in Architecture by Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and a MFA by Université Paris VIII Vincennes-Saint Denis. His recent work is built on the intersection between art, architecture and anthropology. Recent solo projects include Sitio at Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye in Poissy France; Fort Da / Sampler at the Neutra-VDL House in Los Angeles; In the Shadow of the Sun at the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Divan at the Freud Museum London, and Double Halo, at the Pavilion Le Corbusier, Foundation Suisse, CIUP Paris. Forthcoming projects include Astral Bodies // Invisible Planes at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona and Thought Forms at the Sonneveld House in Rotterdam. Borja has been recipient of a SNCA-FONCA fellowship, and grants from the Graham Foundation, the Fundación Marcelino Botín and the Fundación/Colección Jumex among others.

This event is co-presented with the Mies van der Rohe Society.
