House Housing: An Untimely History of Architecture and Real Estate is an ongoing research project conducted by the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture/ Columbia University that encourages a public, historically informed conversation about the intersection of architecture and real estate development. In Chicago, the Buell Center has partnered with the National Public Housing Museum for an installation in two apartments within the former Jane Addams Homes. The exhibition We, Next Door organized by NPHM with young people in its “Youth Advisory Council” responds creatively and critically to the House Housing episodes—situating the project specifically in Chicago, and in the teens’ lived experience of public housing. Together these exhibitions speak of a history that is untimely due to its ability to unsettle the present, with the aim that visitors discover a new perspective through which to see the architecture and real estate that surrounds us all.
